WHIZ KIDS Tutoring and Mentoring
WHIZ KIDS is a program of City Gospel Mission offering hope for at-risk elementary school children by pairing them with a caring Christian adult to assist them in improving their reading skills. Training and all the supplies needed to tutor (not teach!) reading for one hour a week are provided. If you can read, you have a valuable resource to share! All you need is the desire to sit regularly with a deserving little soul. You, as that committed, caring adult, can have a positive impact on the student’s prospect of succeeding. Reading is a life-changing skill!!
Over 60% of adults in the US prison system read at or below 4th grade level
85% of US juvenile inmates are functionally illiterate (Source: US Dept of Ed.2006)
Whiz Kids realizes that a permanent hope for these children comes from the local church pointing to Jesus Christ. Fun group activities, along with your school-year long commitment, may be what begin to introduce these students to our God and the hope they can have in Jesus Christ. WE NEED YOU!
In January, GUMC will be entering into a partnership with WHIZ KIDS and PLEASANT RUN ELEMENTARY on Hamilton Ave.
We need tutors!!! Contact: Dianna Sheely—Or reserve your training time with your Whiz Kids Area Director, Carole Strecker 513-519-2388 cstrecker@citygospelmission.org
